Definition of an artist/Pursuit of Perfection

artist: noun: a person who practices any of the various creative arts, such as a sculptor, novelist, poet, or filmmaker.

As an author, I, by definition am an artist and as an artist, I am sensitive about my…work. Because I am sensitive about my work, I take great pride in what I produce. I also take great pride in saying I am a perfectionist, this novel, Sex and the Single Girl, a definite testament to that.
Even though I realize the expectation of perfection may be an unrealistic one, I can and will still strive for it. And if in my quest for perfection, others produce three books in the time it takes me to produce my one, I am okay with that, because perfection takes time.
Three years after I thought I’d completed the first draft of Sex and the Single Girl, I was still perfecting it, all because someone made a suggestion that it was good for my first effort, but it could be better.
As frustrating as that was to hear, I took it to heart and worked until it was more than just good enough, it was something I was proud of, it was as perfect as I could make it.
If that means my next book takes another three years–which it won’t, I promise–before I am ready to release it to the world, then so be it. That means I have held it as long as was necessary to get it to standard, and not just any standard, MY standard.
And because it will be up to the very strict standards I hold myself to, I promise you nothing less than my best as mediocrity is not an option.

For those who have been with me on this long journey, I thank you for your patience waiting on Sex and the Single Girl all these years. And I thank you in advance for your patience as I work on and prepare my next labor of love, due date unknown.

Bluffton Book Festival 2017

Yesterday, I experienced a first. Thanks to Rockelle Henderson, for the first time in my writing career, I was a part of a book event, specifically the 2nd Annual Bluffton Book Festival in downtown Bluffton (SC).

20171118_150027

The night before, which was Friday, there was a fundraising event at Outback Steakhouse in which there was an author panel where we got to hear bestselling authors talk about their work and what inspired them. We also had the opportunity to purchase books and have them autographed, and of course, I took advantage of that.

I learned about lots of interesting books that I probably wouldn’t have heard of otherwise and bought a couple of them. Note to self: check out “Minnow” and “Lightening Men”.

But truthfully, the highlight of my night was meeting NYT bestselling author Mary B. Morrison  Mary B & I and contemporary romance author Cheris Hodges Cheris & I! Friendly, approachabland Both of them were remarkably down to earth and I was humbled to be able to share my work with these ladies. (Coincidentally, they are published with one of the companies I looked into when I was thinking about publishing through a traditional publisher, Kensington/Dafina).

Saturday was an exciting day for me, especially considering this was the first time I attended an event as a published author. Even though I didn’t know what to expect, it was exciting to set up my station and take in everything around me. From meeting some of the other authors to interacting with the festival’s visitors, it was an experience I will never forget! I look forward to attending again next year -maybe even with my next book. I’m already looking for the next event to attend so if you know of a book club that wants to have an intimate meeting with the author or any book festivals and events in your area, please let your girl know.

In the meantime, here are a few more pics of my little area. I’m really pleased and proud of how everything came again and I’m already thinking of my next set up 🙂

Better late than never: Launch night told thru pics

BannerHello all. I don’t keep up with my blog  nearly as often as I should, and for that, I apologize. But at least I have a good excuse: I’ve been busy strategizing my next move now that the book is out, and along with that, thinking a whole lot about book #2. The characters are starting to speak louder and more frequently, a definite sign that it’s time for me to put the distractions aside and get back to writing.

But anyway, when I was preparing for the launch, I reached out to several local businesses and entrepreneurs for business partnerships and I’m pleased to say, the support and encouragement I received was humbling. I said I would recognize them and advertise their businesses and without further adieu,  here is my attempt:
